Sea Day

 Today we stopped in the Laguna San Rafael. The good news is the weather improved from our forecast of snow initially but it remains overcast with poor visibility. Fog is sometimes obliterating the hills. To the ship is only doing 3 excursions into the fjord to view the glacier. We opted not to do this excursion so will remain on board for the day. 

The Lagoon was formed by the San Rafael Glacier retreat in 1959.  It covers an area of 6,726 sq mi.  It includes a fjord more than 10 miles long. The tallest peak in the southern Andes 13310 feet is located in the park and there are over 19 glaciers with the San Rafael Glacier being the largest. The area has changed so much in the past 10 years lots of the grandeur has gone due to the continued receding of the ice. 

The above was discussed in our morning lecture on Antarctica.  The ship remained anchored while the excursions took place so essentially it is a sea day for most of us.  The next two days will also be at sea. So no excuses not to blog.
